Every European child I have met speaks the native language, and is conversant in another. My old boss is a Spaniard - he fluid in French & English (writes English like a US college grad who had to buy thesis papers), and can handle German, Italian (relative to Spanish) and Flemish, have attended school in Belgium. When speaking to anyone in our Belgium office, they move seamlessly from English, to French, to Flemish or Dutch . . . there is just something fundamentally flawed in the US education debate. And the Europeans are no less grounded than US in math & science.
