Text: Tortora & Derrickson, Principles of Anatomy & Physiology, 12th ed., 2009 (do not use earlier editions). Text Web Site: www.wiley.com/college/tortora
Catalog Description: A detailed study of the structure and function of the human body. Anatomical studies include gross, histological, and cytological perspectives and are correlated with physiology. Functional studies emphasize homeostatic, regulatory, and integrative mechanisms. Pathophysiological processes are compared with normal anatomy and physiology. Course is designed to meet the requirements of allied health majors (dietetics, medical technology, nursing, physician assistant, pre-physical or pre-occupational therapy). Prerequisite: at least one semester of college chemistry or one year of high school chemistry.
Design: The course is divided into four segments, for which you will receive learning objectives. The objectives should be referred to in class and also when studying the text and your class notes. You are responsible for all objectives and terms, whether or not they are covered in class. The instructor will use class time for discussion of difficult concepts and to review material from previous classes, but there will not be time to address every objective. Therefore, each student must take responsibility for his or her learning, as guided by the Learning Objectives. Each segment will conclude with a 50-minute exam.
Terminology Quizzes: A major challenge of the course will be mastering the terminology associated with the human body. There are hundreds of terms with which you will need to become familiar. One tool to aid your study will be the Terminology Quizzes. These eight quizzes will be taken from word lists that follow the sequence of the text.
The Challenge: If you wish to succeed in this course, then it is imperative that you read the assigned pages in the text before coming to class. Also, the PowerPoint lectures are available in the Maura 110 computer lab so that you can view them ahead of time. Because of the volume of material to be covered, class sessions will move rapidly and you will feel frustrated if you are approaching a new topic cold. There are a number of study resources available, including the tutor, the textbook's Web site, and the weekly review sessions. In addition, I will be available for meetings outside of class. Please do not hesitate to make an appointment to discuss problems with me. Nothing can substitute, however, for consistent, daily study of the material.
Disability Statement: If you have a disability that may require consideration by the instructor, you should contact the Coordinator of Disabled Student Services at 724-838-4295. It is recommended that this be accomplished by the second week of class. If you need accommodations for successful participation in class activities prior to your appointment with the Disabled Student Services Office, you should provide the instructor with written information that includes suggestions for assistance with participating in and completing class assignments. It is not necessary to disclose the nature of your disability.
Academic Honesty Statement: Seton Hill University expects that all its students will practice academic honesty and ethical conduct. The University regards plagiarism, cheating on examinations, falsification of papers, non-sanctioned collaboration, and misuse or illegal use of library material, computer material, or any other material, published or unpublished, as violations of academic honesty.
