Text: Marieb, Elaine N., Human Anatomy & Physiology Laboratory Manual, 8th ed. ,update, 2009

Note: Do not buy earlier editions of the lab manual.

Catalog Description (applies to both semesters): Designed to reinforce concepts learned in BL214 & BL216. Topics include: histology, gross anatomy of the musculoskeletal system, physiology of nerves and skeletal muscle, cardiovascular physiology, urinalysis, digestive enzymes, effects of drugs on heart function.

Purpose: In this laboratory course, we will examine specific topics in human anatomy & physiology that can best be learned in a hands-on setting that emphasizes collaborative learning. While there will be some overlap in topics with respect to the lecture, this is a completely separate course that is graded separately. Included is a detailed, multiple-session study of the human skeletal system in preparation for more advanced work in arthrology and muscular anatomy during the second semester of the course.

Design: The study guides for each lab are to be downloaded from Griffin Gate. You should read them, as well as the assigned material in the manual, prior to each lab meeting. Faithful attendance at all laboratory sessions is essential to learning the material. There are sanctions for unexcused absences from lab (see “Attendance Policy” on p. 5). It is also recommended that you come to the lab at least one other time each week to review the current material with your study group. Maura 111 will be available for this purpose on Monday and Wednesday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Your understanding of the material from each lab will be evaluated by three Written Exams, three Practical Exams, and several review sheets.

The Challenge: If you do not call upon your self-discipline and forge ahead with the lab exercises, even when you would rather be doing something else, then it will be difficult to do well in the course. It will be necessary to cover a large amount of information in each session, so do not plan to leave the lab early. Time spent in lab should be used to best advantage: if you are finished with the day’s objectives, then review previous labs or, if possible, begin to work on material for the next week.

Disability Statement: If you have a disability that may require consideration by the instructor, you should contact the Coordinator of Disabled Student Services at 724-838-4295. It is recommended that this be accomplished by the second week of class. If you need accommodations for successful participation in class activities prior to your appointment with the Disabled Student Services Office, you should provide the instructor with written information that includes suggestions for assistance with participating in and completing class assignments. It is not necessary to disclose the nature of your disability.

Academic Honesty Statement: Seton Hill University expects that all its students will practice academic honesty and ethical conduct. The university regards plagiarism, cheating on examinations, falsification of papers, non-sanctioned collaboration, and misuse or illegal use of library material, computer material, or any other material, published or unpublished, as violations of academic honesty.

Policy on Review Sheets

During the semester, students will complete seven Review Sheets worth a total of 220 points. Students are encouraged to collaborate with others taking the course when completing these sheets. You must, however, hand in your own individual sheet and include the name(s) of your collaborator(s) on the sheet.

To receive credit, Review Sheets must be handed in by the end of Thursday’s lab on the indicated due date. This means that students in Tuesday’s lab also have until Thursday afternoon. Late sheets will not be accepted beyond this time and a grade of zero will be recorded for any assignments not handed in.

Attendance Policy

Students are expected to attend and participate in all 12 lab sessions. Obviously, no one would insist on your presence if you were sick or experiencing an emergency. Except in extraordinary circumstances, however, it should be possible to leave an explanation for your absence on Dr. Bassett’s voice mail (4266 or 724-830-1029) before the lab begins (i.e., before 1:00 PM). If these guidelines are followed, then the student will be granted an excused absence. This presumes, of course, that the reason for the absence was a legitimate one (not, for example, “I had to work.”). Students who are granted an excused absence are responsible for making up any missed exercises, working with a partner, if necessary, since Dr. Bassett will not be available to re-create the missed lab. In the case of an unexcused absence, 50 points will be subtracted from the final point total for the course. Students who miss four or more lab sessions, for whatever reason, even for excused absences, automatically fail the course.

Please print and sign the last page of this syllabus, signifying that you have read and understood this attendance policy, and give it to Dr. Bassett before the end of the first lab session.
